Community Development & Support

The Queensland Department of Communities, Disability Services and Seniors funds the Varsity Lakes Community Resource Centre position of Community Development Officer and Administration Assistant to provide a community support service to improve the capacity of the community to meet its own needs. We aim to assist community members to reach their potential and to increase the capacity and capability of the community.

A community development framework is used to provide quality community services to people in Varsity Lakes (Stephens) and Burleigh Waters. This is a free service open to all community.

General Service - Information and Referral

  • We offer Information and Referral advice to the general public and community organisations.
  • Referral information about existing community services and Australian, State and local government agencies available.
  • We have an up-to-date community notice board and display pamphlets and brochures about available services and resources.
  • We accept requests for information by phone, fax, email or drop-in visiting the Centre.
  • Drop-in visits or appointments during service support hours (Monday to Thursday 8.30am to 4.00pm and Friday 8.30am-12pm.
  • We provide referrals to government and non-government agencies.

Community education - Promoting greater public awareness of social issues particularly those of significance to the local community by conducting or participating in events and activities that highlight social issues; developing and distributing local newsletters, media releases and flyers; displaying information on noticeboards and pamphlet stands and arranging for guest speakers to speak on relevant issues.

Community centre based development and support – Assess the needs and strengths of the local community and in response to those needs such as:

  • sourcing services to operate locally
  • supporting existing groups to develop and expand their activities
  • providing opportunities and support for volunteers to develop skills
  • supporting members of the community to develop local programs/activities
  • assistance with coordination of activities operating from the Varsity Lakes Community Resource Centre to promote optimum use of the centre by the community.

Cultural Group Development - Participation in and promotion of events and activities that enhance the cultural identity of the local community including projects that promote cultural relevance in mainstream services and events that celebrate cultural identity.

Coordination/network development - Participation in networking activities that promote the sharing of information, minimise duplication and support the development of a service system responsive to the needs of the local community.
